Technician and Apprentice Training
At AWP, we are committed to recruiting new staff members at the start of their career and then supporting them through their academic and professional training.
We have developed an excellent partnership with Exeter College through the establishment of the AWP Academy, and support our apprentices and technicians through the Level 3 and Level 4 Civil Engineering Courses. We were delighted to be given an award by Exeter College for Small Employer of the Year in 2024.
A number of our Project Managers started their careers working as Technicians and also attended Exeter College one day a week to study a BTEC. Since joining AWP, Graham and Dan have both sat and passed their EngTech exams to become Technician Members of the Institution of Civil Engineers (MICE). They are both now running their own teams of Technicians and Engineers, as well as having roles within AWP’s senior leadership team.
Exeter College are proud to work with AWP whose continued investment and development in Apprentices have resulted in a successful partnership.
Graduate Training
We encourage everyone at AWP to follow a graduate training route to a professional qualification that is right for them, with the majority of the team opting for either the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).
Our graduate training scheme is approved by the ICE. To prepare our graduates for future careers as Incorporated or Chartered Civil Engineers we provide the opportunity to gain experience in each of our technical teams including Transport Planning, Flood Risk and Detailed Infrastructure Design. We have a policy of rotating our graduate engineers between these teams to give them a breadth to their training and provide a solid foundation for their future civil engineering careers. Our ICE programme is led by Peter Matravers, who is a Fellow of the ICE and AWP’s Supervising Civil Engineer. He is supported by a team of Delegated Engineers on hand to help each of our graduates through every stage of the process.
Our specialist transport planners typically follow the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) program accredited by the CIHT. The TPP qualification has been designed to provide professional recognition for transport planners in the same way that Chartered Engineer recognises the highest level of engineering competence. Our TPP group is led by Craig Mason, who also undertakes TPP professional reviews on behalf of the CIHT.

“I joined AWP with a year of experience as a graduate transport planner after graduating from university in 2020. I have taken a slightly different path to the normal AWP graduate training program with team rotations, having decided that I wanted to predominantly stay within the transport planning team. I have been exposed to a wide range of projects and training whilst working at AWP, increasing my skills and knowledge within the sector. This has included valuable internal training (for example, relevant software such as AutoCAD), as well as external webinars and CPD events. In addition, it has been useful to attend company away days to site, seeing first-hand the development process. With a range of projects, there are always new opportunities to learn and develop both new and existing skills. I am currently working towards my Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification, which AWP has been very encouraging of, providing support in the areas that I need to develop. “AWP’s graduate training programme provides the opportunity to gain experience across the entire design process from the conceptual pre-planning stage to final design. The programme consists of three ‘rotations’ across all areas of the business; two planning teams of transport planning and flood risk & drainage and one of the three detailed infrastructure design teams. Not only does the scheme give graduates the opportunity to gain experience across the entire design process, it also allows you to work alongside different people throughout the office. Completing the training programme allows you to gain a good understanding of all areas of design that the company offers. This is something that is quite rare within the civil engineering sector and is a credit to the fact that AWP is committed to the training and career progression of their staff.
In 2024 I sat my professional review with the ICE and was delighted to pass and obtain Chartered Engineer status. Receiving my chartership has been an amazing achievement for me. I have been supported by AWP over the last 9 years to really grow my skills across a variety of areas which helped me to achieve this milestone and become the engineer I am today.”

Leadership Training
Our aim is to create an environment where all technicians and graduates have the opportunity to grow and develop their leadership and management skills alongside their technical capabilities.
In partnership with Paul Mattin of Wilderness Solutions, we have a continuous rolling training programme involving everybody at all levels in the business aimed at understanding how we work best as individuals, how to interact effectively with others in a team by appreciating the motivators and behaviours of our colleagues, and techniques for getting the best out of the team dynamics to achieve objectives for the business and our clients. The on-going programme includes a mix of workshops in the office and away days for the whole team off-site.
Work Experience
At AWP, we’re keen on providing impactful work placement experiences that blend academic learning with practical application. Our placements are designed to immerse students in the real-world challenges of civil engineering, working closely with our seasoned team. Over time we have welcomed people seeking work experience whilst still at school, at college or looking at an Apprenticeship in engineering, and students studying at university that are considering their options for future career opportunities.
