AWP - STEM Event
20/07/22
Through our links with Exeter University related to our Degree Apprenticeship programme AWP were invited to attend a ‘Building Greater Exeter’ STEM event at St Lukes School on Friday 8th July.
Graham May and Jack Taylor (hiding in the background of the photo, alongside attendees from other local businesses) stepped-out of their comfort zones to lead a classroom of year 8 students who were divided into groups and tasked to design and pitch a sustainable ‘School for the Future’. We then judged the presentations.
There were some great suggestions including a hydro-electric powered school, lots of great ideas on the use of materials and the layout of the building and grounds, plus some slightly more adventurous ideas including a rocket ship (the team chose to compromise and include a planetarium in the end!).
The teams made a great effort to produce and present their proposals to their peers, and Graham and Jack had a tough time picking a winning team who received their prize of a box of chocolates (which may have started to melt in the blazing sunshine on the day!).
At AWP we are always keen to support and enthuse the future generations of potential Civil Engineers through STEM events and hosting work experience students, and we also appoint a number of new Apprenticeseach year through our Exeter College Academy. This brilliant event arranged by Building Greater Exeter, with full support by the leadership and teaching staff of St Lukes School, provided a great insight into the world of engineering for the students and hopefully we have inspired some new talent to consider a career in the profession in the future.
