"We like working with the AWP team as they are experienced, flexible, commercially astute, technically savvy, but above all they get the job done."

Somerton Road, Street

Somerset

AWP were appointed in 2018 by The Ninesquare Trust (a local charitable organisation aimed at providing benefit to the people of Street and its surrounding area) to provide Transport Planning support to help bring forward its land at Somerton Road for the delivery of much needed local housing. Following resolution of the challenging issue of phosphate impacts on the Somerset Levels, we are pleased to report that the site received a resolution to grant conditional Outline planning permission in January 2023.

The site is located on land towards the south of Street, with primary access to be taken from Somerton Road in the form of a new priority junction with ghost island right-turn lane. This will be complemented by a new shared use pedestrian/cycle path to link the site access with the existing footway further north. A series of off-site improvements to pedestrian infrastructure along the walking routes to local schools, employment sites and the town centre were also agreed with Somerset County Council.

For the planning application, managed latterly by CarneySweeney Exeter, AWP completed the Transport Assessment for the site which included capacity analysis for a number of nearby junctions between the site and the A39 to the north of Street, as well as a detailed analysis of routes to local schools and facilities to ensure that sustainable travel choices would be available for the future residents of the site. AWP also provided a Framework Travel Plan for the scheme, which sets out a strategy for the implementation of a package of measures aimed at managing multi-modal access to the development, thereby limiting the number of car trips and promoting alternative sustainable travel options.
