"AWP always responded to our requests and understood the sensitivities of working within the school environment highlighting to us potential pitfalls that we would not have spotted. The design and end result is first class and the school community have been very appreciative of the improvement we have been able to make with AWP’s help."

Uffculme School

Mid Devon

Uffculme School had a problem with the narrow lane outside the school causing congestion at the start and end of the school day. Particular problems were experienced by the coaches bringing students from the wider Mid Devon catchment that the school serves with the steep gradients into the school site causing some coaches to ground out on entry.

AWP were instructed as part of the professional team of Grainge Architects and Hills and undertook initial design of a proposed widening solution for consultation with DCC highways. This scheme was then included within the planning application for the drama studio gaining the necessary planning approvals.

Working within the short time frames that required commencement and completion of the highway works during the school summer holidays AWP then undertook detailed design for tender and the necessary legal agreement with DCC. A full road closure was negotiated with DCC who fully cooperated throughout the process to ensure that the works could be undertaken in the time available whilst discharging all the necessary processes. Final design of the improvements to gradients at the school site access was undertaken on site with the contractor to ensure the most cost effective solution was achieved.

Having started design work in May 2016 the widening and new site access was open for traffic ready for the school to open on 5th September 2016, on time and on budget.  DCC have subsequently confirmed adoption of the road under a S228 Agreement.  Design to adoption in 6 months.
